List of Princely States of India

List of Princely States of India

By Definition, a Princely State is an independent entity in terms of internal administration but in the physical limits of British India. All foreign aspects – army, international relationships and whatever are managed by the British Governemnt of India and anything internal like administration of justice etc were managed by the head of the administration(a king/ a Thakur whatever) albeit with some strings based on his capacity in serving the British and the historic relationship they had with the British. Some had formal pacts with the British, some were just recognized, some became Princely States just because they were there. Some of them like Kashmir or Hyderabad were huger than most of the European nations of today while some like Vij-o-ness or Piplianagar are but a fraction of a square mile. Some of them are kingdoms with their names etched in generations of history and originated in antiquity like Mewar or Tehri or Orchha, some of them, due to the political changes like Baroda or Gwalior or Hyderabad, some were bought as estates to be managed like Kashmir, some were just petty landholders upgraded to the rank of a princeley state just because the central authority above them, the Mughals crumbled, the best example being Kathiawar and the last set were plunderers who were given lands to placate or calm them just like that of Garrauli or Tonk. Some Princely states were annexed by the British according to their whims and fancies like Tanjore or Nagpur, some lapsed due to the lack of heirs, some due to rebellion. Some were demoted like that of Ramanad and some were upgraded like that of Patiala for being in the right or wrong graces at the required time. I don’t know what defines classification into a Zamindari or a Princeley State, but there are many Princeley States which are much smaller than Zamindaris like Ramanad and Darbhanga.

Based on the information I was able to gather, below is the list of Princely States which joined the Dominion of India(not Pakistan or the Gulf). The attachment, though not complete, gives considerable details regarding them. With the resources I have got, I’ll never be able to complete this sheet. Any inputs to complete this sheet or any corrections are always welcome.

Princeley States

Update: Got hold of a Government Gazette of Bombay Presidency which gives a list of Gujarat Princeley States, the biggest troublemakers in making a final list. Even the states mentioned in this doesn’t add up to 228 of Kathiawar which signed a pact with India.

And a map of Kathiawar. The chaos in the map itself is a simple reason why neither Junagadh nor Baroda nor the British preferred a status quo.

  4. Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

    1. Most likely it isn’t available. The best list I could find is archived in the government’s website Abhilekh-Patal. Search for “List of States who has signed Instruments of Accession and Stand Still Agreement”.

  7. Once again, great article. Very useful for my research. Thank you. On the princely states -while most sources seem to suggest there were 566, some say 565. There are other numbers floating around as well. Given you have studied this subject at some length, what is the exact no?

    1. No one knows. It was more like a formality for some very small states and jagidars to join. So they didn’t make a checklist. Most accepted number of if such a lost would have exosted is 565.

It was also a difficult task to determine if an area to be considered a princeley state or just zamindaari.

  8. Zamindari was not hereditary.
Zamindari could be bought when existing Zamindari lapsed.
Rajas has their own police system for minor civil cases.

  9. Singrauli was not a princely state. it’s completely wrong, it was dense forest here in singrauli 100 years ago. it was ruled by khairwars
