Two clear cut examples of how imperialism changes perceptions. The first one is from 1500s and the second one is from 1900. The context of the first statement is from 1500s when Japan was new to the imperialistic world and was somewhat receptive to evangelism.
The second one, from 1904(TWH Crossland), was when Japan is literally their equal and is trashing Russia in a war and this was completely unpalatable to the Europeans.
Another perspective of the same, a bit more civilized.
The point to learn out of this is, no one is going to tolerate an upstart, even if he was a good friend of yours sometime before.
And don’t forget, this is exactly the same attitude which dragged Japan into Second World War and ironically, the collapse of the complete colonial empire.
