Osman Pasha, the General of the Ottoman Field Force at Plevna surrendered after giving a bloody fight to the Russians and was sent to Russia as a Prisoner of War. A folk story came up saying he used to see a Bosniak girl by name Đula. The below is a song composed in the aftermath of the fall of Plevna –

Sweet Đula cried
Osman Pasha’s true love
My Osman, where have you been?
Where have you lost your army?

I’m here! Young Đula
Near the old city of Pljevlja
Whole army the Czar gave me
I lost them here, Đula

I became a slave, Đula
Disarmed the sharp sword
Now I don’t have got anyone left
Besides the one and only God

Bride Đula, remarry
Don’t have hope for your Osman
The enemy turned me a slave
And seperated us forever

And the original –

Zaplakala secer Djula
Osman-pase vjerna ljuba
moj Osmane, gdje si bio
gdje si vojsku izgubio

Evo mene, Djulo mlada
pokraj plevna starog grada
sto mi care vojske dade
sve mi, Djulo, za din pade

Ja sam, Djulo, robstva pao
britku sablju otpasao
pa sad nemam nikog svoga
osim Boga jedinoga

Djulo mlada, preudaj se
meni nikad ne nadaj se
dusman me je zarobio
sa tobom me rastavio
