Devanagari script is the lingua franca of north India. But, it is not easy to write in the script at a pace. The Marathi solution for this was Modi. It was developed by Hemadri, a Yadava Prime Minister. This was officially replaced by the current Devanagari script in 1917 due to the complications in typography
